Men Dressing Tips

You might ask yourself: “Why should I want care about the way I dress?“, the answer is very simple; the way you dress (believe it or not) affects both in your personal and professional life. When you go up to someone or someone goes past you automatically they’re judging you without even knowing about it. You must already have done it many times in your everyday life without even noticing it. Conclusion: if you look like crap, people will treat you like crap. So here’s some tips so you know you always look good:

  • JeansYou should at least have 3 pairs of jeans (if possible in different tones so you can have more matches), look up for these fits: standard (sometimes they’re ugly, you gotta be careful), boot cut, slim/straight and low rise. Stay away from: carpenter, relaxed, baggy, toland and loose fit, trust me, they’re freaking disgusting! And they don’t look good to any type of man! PS: if you have wide hips (I do, so I know what I’m talking about) or a wide ass, STAY AWAY from slim/tight jeans, you’ll look like an ice-cream cone and you’ll look bigger than what you really are…
  • Before you dress up, you need to see colours, if they suit you or not according to your skin colour and to the model of the piece of clothing.
  • Avoid short-sleeved shirts, because they look cheap, if you’re in a warm place try a long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up neatly (there’s many ways to roll the sleeves).
  • If you’re matching colours, make sure they work and go together, if you know you don’t have much of a taste, try mixing any colour with white (white goes with everything, black is not as safe).
  • Try matching these, one on top of another (they should always be in different colours): long-sleeved shirt (under) + polo (top)/long-sleeved shirt (under) + t-shirt/long-sleeved shirt + plain sweater vest (it’s kinda old sounding, but it isn’t! try out and you’ll see)/white t-shirt + vest. There’s many other combinations, but you can start off with these ones.
  • Use accessories, they fill up some “blanks” in your body. You should only have one accessory per area. e.g.: NEVER wear more than one piece of bracelet in the whole outfit. This rule applies to rings and necklaces. If you’re wearing a watch, you won’t be using a bracelet as well, choose between one of the two, and when wearing a watch, make sure it’s not loose, that it grab holds to your wrist.
  • When selecting pants/jeans make sure they’re your waist size, and if they’re too long, it doesn’t matter, just take it to your tailor to make them your length. NEVER roll the bottom of the pants outside.
  • ShortsShorts are okay to use if your age allows you to. Make sure they’re only a little bit longer than your top tip of your knee. Beige coloured shorts are usually the best, combine it with a light-toned shirt and a good pair of brown flip flops (that you think that looks good with it) and you’re ready to go casually to many places! (this is a tip for summer, or warm countries)-make sure to roll up your sleeves to look more casual. And by the way, NEVER buy jean shorts, they look extremely cheap, and they really look bad for any type of person, of any age, any body type… they’re horribleĀ  (ps: there ARE good short jeans, but they’re EXTREMELY difficult to find, and if you know you kinda don’t have a good taste, better don’t risk yourself).
  • Underwear is really important! They give you shape to the body, tank shirts are very good to wear if your country’s weather allows to.
  • HairHair is really important! First of all go to a GOOD hairdresser (by this I mean an expensive one) to suggest you a hairstyle that suits you, let him/her do the job, after this, you know what hairstyle looks good on you, and you can carry on going to your regular hairdresser and tell him/her to do it that way. Try to change hairstyle every year or every 2 years or something, don’t stick to the same hairstyle for your whole life, so people don’t get tired of your look. Or just stick to a good ol’ classical one…
  • Always: the belt should be the same colour as the shoes, socks should match the pants and they should be big enough so when you cross your legs (even if you don’t do so) people can’t see your skin.
  • NEVER wear socks in sandals, flip-flops or whatever! It’s ridiculous! And don’t try out those creepy shoes… crocs… they’re pretty ugly, and only people with no taste at all wear them. And never wear pants that are too short, you’ll know this by walking a bit; if you notice you can see your socks while walking they are TOO SHORT, time to get a new set of pants…
  • MurseUse a murse everywhere you go. PS: the murse should match the outfit.
  • When choosing a t-shirt, make sure the logos, and printings aren’t as big, or you’ll look just like a f***ing billboard!- You should wear the brand, the brand shouldn’t wear you.
  • Try to maintain your closet as colourful as possible (so friends and people you see very often don’t think the way you dress is dull).
  • Pants: When you’re choosing pants, make sure there are MAXIMUM 2 staples in the pants, in my opinion, get pants with no staples at all, gives a younger look, don’t try relaxed-fit pants, they suck, try the rest and see which one looks better with your type of body. When you purchase the pants, before you “take them for a walk”, you should always take them to your tailor previously (it takes less than 20 minutes to do the job), to make them according to your leg length, they shouldn’t touch the floor while you have your shoes on, and be long enough so people shouldn’t be able to see your socks while you walk, that’s the perfect length (this applies to jeans as well).
  • Shoes: make sure they’re always polished and don’t have holes or dirt, keep them “new” as much as you can. When the shoe starts walking by itself, you know you have to buy a new pair! However, there are some sneakers that with time get a “vintage” look, like Converse, but there’s up to certain point that they’re not vintage anymore, and they’re just old… make sure to know how to differenciate “vintage” from “old”.
  • You don’t have to buy designer’s clothing to look good, if you do the correct thing you’ll look like a thousand dollars, there’s manyLouis Vuitton cheap chain stores you can look up to, avoid shopping at the Salvation Army due to they only have one piece of clothing in one size and it’s second handed….!! Just save up a few bucks more to buy at a chain store.
  • Ties: this should be known amongst every person that wears a tie; your tie must match the outfit or suit what you’re wearing, and when you tie a tie, make sure the really bottom tip of the tie reaches the really top tip of your belt, it shouldn’t be larger or shorter than that. And remember that ties nowadays are used for casual outfits as well, not only in suits/tuxedos.

REMEMBER!: Never limit yourself in the way you dress, you should always try new stuff and be confident in what you wear, these tips are just a good way to start with, when you are confident and know what you are doing, take a step farther and try new stuff.
